Founded by a veterinarian in 2005, Pets Best was launched to help reduce the incidence of “economic euthanasia,” when pets are put down because owners can’t afford veterinary care. Pets Best offers insurance plans for dogs and cats but not exotic animals. Coverage includes everything from routine wellness checkups to surgery. It does not, however, cover elective procedures, such as nail trimming. Pets Best insurance is underwritten by American Pet Insurance Company (APIC) and administered by Pets Best.

Pros:

  • Offers both accident-only and plans that cover both accidents and illness

  • Short three-day waiting period for accident coverage

  • Optional Routine Care coverage available

  • No forms when filing claims

Cons:

  • Pre-existing conditions are not covered

  • Six month waiting period for cruciate ligament coverage

Pets Best offers two main types of policies: a policy that only provides coverage for accidents and one that provides coverage for accidents and illnesses. The BestBenefits Accident and Illness policy provides the option of adding coverage for vet exams and rehab for your pet for covered conditions. Pre-existing conditions are not covered, although this is among the norm for pet insurance providers in our rating.

Plans from Pets Best have annual limits, annual deductibles, and reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, and 90%. If you use the company’s mobile app or website, you can file claims without having to fill out any forms.

There is also the option of adding a Routine Care rider which would provide coverage for such things as flea and tick prevention, microchipping, vaccinations, etc. There are two tiers of Routine Care coverage offered, EssentialWellness and BestWellness. Moving up from EssentialWellness to BestWellness adds coverage for wellness exams, spaying and neutering, and teeth cleaning.

There are waiting periods for Pets Best policies. For accidents, there is a three-day waiting period which is among the shortest for companies in our rating. The waiting period for illness coverage is 14 days, with most companies in our rating having a 14- or 15-day waiting period. The six-month waiting period for cruciate ligament coverage is on the longer end for companies in our rating.

Bottom Line:

Pets Best provides coverage for accidents and illnesses as well as the option of adding coverage for preventative care. Its policies have reimbursement rates, ranging from 70% to 90%, and annual coverage limits. The requisite waiting period for accidents is shorter than average for companies in our rating, while the waiting period for cruciate ligament coverage is on the longer side.

Pets Best has two policies, its BestBenefit Accident and Illness plan and an Accident Only plan.

BestBenefit insurance plan for cats and dogs can be customized in a few different ways. You can select an annual benefit limit, annual deductible, and reimbursement amount.

Pets Best’s BestBenefit Accident and Illness plan’s annual benefit limits are $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited. Deductibles range from $50 to $1,000 and reimbursement percentages range between 70% and 90%. You can pay premiums monthly, quarterly, or annually. Unlike some other pet insurance policies, Pets Best deductibles are paid annually, not per incident.

Pets Best plans are effective at any licensed veterinarian’s office or animal hospital in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The BestBenefit Accident and Illness dog and cat insurance plans from Pets Best cover accidents, illnesses, chronic conditions, cancer, hereditary and congenital conditions, emergency care, and more.

Pets Best’s Best Benefit Accident and Illness offers three tiers of coverage: Essential, Plus, and Elite. The essential tier offers the basic policy. The Plus tier adds coverage for vet exam fees for covered conditions and the Elite tiers add coverage for rehab, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments. For more information on the specifics of each plan, you will need to get a quote.

Pets Best offers two optional wellness add-ons that provide routine care coverage for the following: spay/neuter, teeth cleaning, rabies, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, vaccinations, wellness exams, screenings, blood and parasite exams, microchipping, urinalysis, and deworming. The EssentialWellness option includes $305 of annual coverage in these categories, while the BestWellness add-on provides a combined $535 of coverage.

The BestBenefit Accident and Illness plan can also be customized to cover vet visits for covered conditions and for such therapies as acupuncture, chiropractic care, and rehabilitation.

Our sample monthly cost for Best Pets insurance for dogs is $26.89 and, for cat coverage, is $11.93 per month. These prices are based on a one-year-old large mixed-breed dog and a male domestic shorthair cat that is under one year old with a $500 deductible, $5,000 annual limit, and a 90% reimbursement rate.

Premium prices fluctuate based on whether your pet has pre-existing conditions, the breed and species, age, your location since vet expenses can cost more in certain regions, and the type of policy structure you elect. You can customize your coverage and the premium cost by selecting an annual benefit limit, annual deductible, and reimbursement rate to make the cost of pet insurance budget-friendly.

Your premium will cost more if you choose to add one of its two wellness benefits, but you’ll save on routine care such as check-ups and flea and tick prevention. Add EssentialWellness with a $305 annual benefit for an average of $16 per month, or BestWellness with $535 in annual coverage for about $26 per month.

There’s a 5% multi-pet discount available. Pets Best also offers a 5% discount for military and family members that is available in all states except for Alaska, Hawaii, and Tennessee.

Pets Best assesses a $2 fee per transaction that is reduced if you select quarterly or annual billing instead of paying a monthly premium. Pets Best will not increase the cost of your premium if you file a claim, so the policy structure you select is what you’ll pay even if you maximize the benefit.

The prices below are for monthly premiums.

How do I buy pet insurance from Pets Best?

To buy pet insurance from Pets Best, begin by getting an online quote, which involves providing your pet’s name, gender, breed, age, and primary veterinarian. You will also need to answer a couple of questions about your pet’s health history, including whether your pet has experienced previous symptoms or been diagnosed with a chronic condition or breed-specific illness. You’ll also need to provide some personal information, including your name, email, and ZIP code.

From there, you’ll choose an Essential plan with no optional benefits offered, a Plus plan for accidents, illnesses, injuries, and related exam fees, or the Elite plan that adds rehab to coverage. Next, you can include a wellness add-on for routine care coverage if you choose. The entire process is facilitated online.

Does Pets Best offer a wellness plan?

Pets Best offers add-on wellness coverage for routine and preventive care, including heartworm and flea/tick prevention, spaying/neutering, deworming, dental cleaning, vaccinations, microchipping, and checkups.

You can opt for either the EssentialWellness or the BestWellness plan. The BestWellness plan covers a larger amount of the expenses. For example, the EssentialWellness plan doesn’t cover teeth cleaning or spaying or neutering your pet, while the BestWellness plan will cover up to $150 toward the cost of those procedures.

Does Pets Best cover pre-existing conditions?

Pets Best doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, including those that may not have been previously diagnosed by a vet. If symptoms of a condition show up before the policy starts or in the waiting period, even if they haven’t been officially diagnosed, it will be considered a pre-existing condition.

Does Pets Best cover spaying?

Pets Best’s standard BestBenefit dog and cat insurance policies don’t cover the cost of spaying or neutering a pet. To obtain coverage for spaying or neutering, you also must purchase the BestWellness plan, the more expensive of Best Pet’s two wellness coverage tiers. The BestWellness option pays up to $150 toward the cost of the procedure.

Does Pets Best cover dental cleanings?

Pets Best doesn’t cover teeth cleaning as part of its basic policy. Pet owners must purchase a supplemental BestWellness plan, which will reimburse up to $150 per year toward the cost of a dental cleaning.

How do I contact Pets Best’s customer service?

You can contact Pets Best customer service by phone Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., MST or Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pets Best also provides a fax number and address on its contact page, along with a search tool for finding answers to frequently asked questions.

Pets Best also has a mobile app that allows you to contact support, access benefits, submit claims, and gives you access to Pets Best’s 24/7 Pet Helpline where you will have access to veterinary experts to answer questions about your pet’s health.

Does Pets Best have any coverage limits?

Pets Best offers an Unlimited Accident and Illness Plan that has no annual or lifetime limits. This means you can get reimbursed any amount throughout the life of the policy without hitting a benefit cap of any kind. But, Pets Best does also offer a plan with a $5,000 annual limit.

Does Pets Best have a deductible?

Pets Best allows you to select your annual deductible. Deductibles range from $50 to $1,000. If you choose a higher deductible, your monthly premium price will be lower but you’ll pay more in out-of-pocket costs. Annual deductibles must be met for each policy term.

How do I file a claim with Pets Best?

To file a claim with Pets Best, you will be encouraged to use the online portal to submit, update, and check a claim’s status. You can set up a direct deposit or request that Pets Best pays your vet directly. Claims can be emailed or mailed as well.

Pets Best asks for original paid invoices; no estimates or unpaid invoices as proof of payment. Proof can include a credit card receipt. Be sure to sign the claim form.

How long does it take Pets Best to reimburse a claim?

Pets Best doesn’t indicate how long it takes to process claims, but it does state that it can reimburse claims by direct deposit as soon as two days after processing. Reimbursements by paper check will be sent five to seven days after claims are processed. Pets Best encourages policyholders to sign up for direct deposit in the Customer Account portal online or in the app.

How do I cancel a pet insurance plan from Pets Best?

To terminate your Pets Best insurance policy, use the cancellation form on the company website. Just provide your contact information, policy number, and the reason you wish to end the policy, and Pets Best will cancel it the same day the notice is received.

You can also cancel your policy using the website chat app, by phone, or by mail.
