Nationwide offers four kinds of pet insurance coverage. Its Pet Wellness plan covers things like vaccinations, wellness exams, and testing. The Major Medical plan covers things like exams, prescriptions, chronic conditions, surgery, hospitalization, and certain hereditary conditions. The Whole Pet plan covers everything Major Medical does plus benefits such as prescribed pet foods and supplements, gingivitis, parasite treatments, and Cesarean sections.
Its Avian & Exotic Pet Plan provides accident and illness coverage and applies to most types of birds, reptiles, rodents, and unusual pets such as sugar gliders, goats, hedgehogs, ferrets, and chinchillas. Nationwide is the only pet insurance provider in our 2022 rating to offer coverage for pets other than cats, dogs, and horses.
Your benefit limits will depend on the plan you choose. For example, the Whole Pet will have an annual limit while Major Medical will have an annual per condition or service limit.
Nationwide has an enrollment age limit of ten years. However, Nationwide does not permanently exclude certain pre-existing conditions. If your pet has a condition that has been considered cured for at least half a year, it may become eligible for coverage.
Nationwide gives pet owners multiple options. They can go for basic wellness reimbursement, buy coverage for accidents and illness, or purchase a plan to cover most potential pet issues. The company also has coverage for people with non-traditional pets who might have a hard time finding reliable insurance for their iguanas, sugar gliders, or pot-bellied pigs.
Nationwide offers several pet insurance plans including Whole Pet with Wellness, Major Medical, Pet Wellness, and Avian & Exotic Pets. The Whole Pet Wellness plan includes coverage of injuries and illnesses as well as routine care for your pet. You can also purchase Pet Wellness Basic or Pet Wellness Plus plans that cover routine vaccinations, nail trimming, and fecal tests. Because Nationwide offers several different types of plans – Whole Pet Wellness, Major Medical, Basic Wellness, and Avian and Exotic Pet – there are not any other add-ons to its plans. Customizations to your plan depend on the plan you select. For example, you could opt for the Whole Pet with Wellness coverage if you’d like to be reimbursed for a percentage of your total veterinary bill. If you prefer to know the exact amount of reimbursement capped no matter the cost of the veterinary bill, you might opt for Nationwide’s Major Medical coverage.
A sample Whole Pet Wellness plan from Nationwide for a one-year-old mixed-breed female dog between 50 and 90 pounds costs $56.74 per month. Our sample policy for a one-year-old male domestic shorthair cat has a premium of $28.15 per month. Both prices are for animals that reside in Texas and have a $250 annual deductible and a $10,000 annual limit. While these premiums are on the higher end of companies in our rating, the policy also includes some wellness coverage which most companies in our rating do not offer unless as an add-on.

Is there a waiting period for a Nationwide pet insurance policy?
The Whole Pet plan has a 14-day waiting period for both medical and wellness coverage. The waiting period begins when your application and payment have been received. If you opt for the Major Medical plan, you will also have a 14-day waiting period, beginning when your application and payment are received.
For Nationwide’s Pet Wellness plan, your coverage begins 24 hours after the policy is issued and your payment is received. This applies only if you purchase this plan without the medical plan. If the wellness plan is purchased as a rider to the medical plan, then the 14-day waiting period applies.

Does Nationwide pet insurance offer a wellness plan?
Nationwide offers several Wellness Plans for pets. This wellness coverage applies to routine care of your dog or cat. Its Whole Pet Wellness plan combines wellness coverage as well as accident and illness coverage. The Wellness Basic plan ranges in cost from $12 to $18 per month, and will reimburse you for vet visits up to $400 per policy year.
The Wellness Plus plan will cost anywhere from $17 to $22 per month and has a maximum annual benefit of $500. Both plans reimburse you at varying amounts for two physical exams per year and other wellness treatments such as nail trims, flea and tick prevention, microchipping, vaccinations, and even behavior exams.
Does Nationwide pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Nationwide pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. However, the company does not permanently exclude all pre-existing conditions. Some may be eligible for coverage if your pet’s medical records prove that the condition was cured at least six months previously.
Does Nationwide pet insurance cover spaying?

Does Nationwide’s pet insurance have any coverage limits?
When you have pet insurance through Nationwide, you can expect to encounter some payment limits as part of your plan. Major Medical coverage has caps on payments on an annual per-condition basis. Its Whole Pet policy has annual coverage limits. The annual cap for Nationwide’s Wellness Basic plan is $400 per policy period.
Does Nationwide’s pet insurance policies have a deductible?
Your Nationwide pet insurance does have a deductible. This is the amount that you agree to pay for covered veterinary expenses before your insurance coverage kicks in. You may have an annual deductible. Nationwide has an annual deductible for its Whole Pet plan, My Pet Protection plans, Medical and Major Medical plans, and its injury plan. You will only need to satisfy that deductible once per policy term, no matter how many claims you submit.

How do I file a pet insurance claim with Nationwide?
Claims can be submitted online via its website. There is a claim form – blank or pre-filled depending on which you prefer – to submit. You’ll also want to submit your supporting documents at the same time to ensure that your claim is processed efficiently and quickly. Make sure any documents you attach (such as invoices from your vet) are legible and are fully scanned. Claims can also be submitted to Nationwide via fax, email, or mail once you print off the online claim form.
How long does it take Nationwide to reimburse a pet insurance claim?
Nationwide advises customers that it can take up to 30 days for reimbursement from a claim. Your account access page allows you to check on the status of your claim at any time.
In order for your claim to be processed quickly, Nationwide encourages customers to submit all information – treatment notes, and lab results – together. If you have to submit additional information after submitting your initial claim form, your 30-day reimbursement period begins from the latest submission.
You can also avoid delays by making sure that your name, your pet’s name, and policy number are included on the claim form; that you have properly filled out the diagnosis box on the claim form; and that you’ve included an itemized invoice with your pet’s name and a breakdown of services included.
How do I cancel a pet insurance policy from Nationwide?
Your Nationwide insurance policy can be canceled at any time. You can notify Nationwide in writing (or via fax) by stating your name, policy number, pet name, and your reason for canceling. You can also easily cancel your policy online by logging into your Nationwide account access. There is a “Cancel My Policy” link under your pet’s policy information.
Your policy is considered canceled on the date that your cancellation request is received and you can no longer file any claims. If you have a refund due to you, based on the time of your cancellation, it will be credited to the account with which you paid for your pet insurance initially. You will also receive a cancellation confirmation letter from Nationwide.
