ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Review & Prices

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is No. 8 in our rating of Best Pet Insurance Companies of 2022. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance licenses its name from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), but the insurance is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company and administered by a Crum & Forster unit. The Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group is one of the oldest U.S. pet insurance providers.

  • Provides illness/injury coverage (including holistic/alternative therapies)

  • Offers insurance for horses

  • Has options for preventative care insurance

  • Claims may take up to 30 days

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance lets owners choose between accident and illness coverage and an accident-only plan, plus the option of preventive care coverage. The company covers the usual issues, including hospitalization, surgery, emergency vet care, and cancer treatment. It also covers hereditary/congenital, chronic, and breed-specific conditions, as well as holistic/alternative care, behavioral therapy, and even stem cell treatment.

Pre-existing conditions (other than ligament or knee issues) may not be permanently excluded. Once a pet has healed and displays no additional symptoms for 180 days, coverage might apply. ASPCA does not have an upper age limit for enrollment, which is good news for owners of senior pets.

The Complete Coverage and Accident Only policies from ASPCA have annual deductibles and annual coverage limits. With annual coverage limits, your limits will reset at the start of a new policy year.

The Preventive Care option has scheduled annual benefit limits that also reset at the start of a new policy year. With scheduled benefit limits, the policy will reimburse you for specific amounts of each covered expense. For example, if your pet received a deworming treatment, depending on whether you purchased the Basic or Prime Preventive Care option, you would be reimbursed either $20 or $25 as opposed to a percentage of the vet bill like in the Complete Coverage or Accident Only policies.

Claims processing time is on the high end, at up to 30 days.

ASPCA also sells insurance for horses, which is fairly unique among companies in our rating.

Bottom Line:

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers solid coverage for typical illnesses and injuries, including holistic/alternative therapies. Its policies have both annual deductibles and annual coverage limits that will reset at the start of a new policy year. It is also the only company in our rating to provide policies for horses.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance for dogs and cats offers a Complete Coverage plan that includes both accidents and illnesses, and an Accident-Only plan that only covers accidents. You can customize the plans to pick an annual deductible, annual limit, and coverage percentage, meaning the percentage of eligible claims are paid by the insurer, to find a premium that works for you. The company also offers plans for horses – an offering unique among companies in our rating.

You can also add preventive care plan options to the existing plans. These cover things like deworming, flea and tick medications, wellness visits, and the like. Microchip implementation is covered in the Complete Coverage plan without the need for a wellness plan. The company offers Basic and Prime preventive care plans that deliver different levels of coverage for different types of wellness treatments, so make sure you understand the plans you’re considering. Preventive care plans payout according to an annual limit on a particular type of service and works separately from the payout percentages, annual deductibles, and annual limits on your main coverage plan.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance plans don’t cover pre-existing conditions unless they’ve been cured and free of symptoms for at least 180 days. They do cover behavioral health and alternative treatments.

Wellness plans are available as an add-on and they cover things like vaccines, spaying and neutering, heartworm treatment, and preventative care office visits. You can see a list of the services provided by different wellness and decide what works best. These plans work independently from the main plan, meaning there’s a certain amount the company will pay for different types of services separate from your main policy’s annual maximums and deductibles.

You can generally customize the deductible, annual payout maximum, and the percentage ASPCA Pet Health Insurance will pay per claim. You can also choose accident-only pet insurance if you prefer it.
