ASPCA Pet Health Insurance lets owners choose between accident and illness coverage and an accident-only plan, plus the option of preventive care coverage. The company covers the usual issues, including hospitalization, surgery, emergency vet care, and cancer treatment. It also covers hereditary/congenital, chronic, and breed-specific conditions, as well as holistic/alternative care, behavioral therapy, and even stem cell treatment.
Pre-existing conditions (other than ligament or knee issues) may not be permanently excluded. Once a pet has healed and displays no additional symptoms for 180 days, coverage might apply. ASPCA does not have an upper age limit for enrollment, which is good news for owners of senior pets.
The Complete Coverage and Accident Only policies from ASPCA have annual deductibles and annual coverage limits. With annual coverage limits, your limits will reset at the start of a new policy year.
The Preventive Care option has scheduled annual benefit limits that also reset at the start of a new policy year. With scheduled benefit limits, the policy will reimburse you for specific amounts of each covered expense. For example, if your pet received a deworming treatment, depending on whether you purchased the Basic or Prime Preventive Care option, you would be reimbursed either $20 or $25 as opposed to a percentage of the vet bill like in the Complete Coverage or Accident Only policies.
Claims processing time is on the high end, at up to 30 days.
ASPCA also sells insurance for horses, which is fairly unique among companies in our rating.

The company offers Basic and Prime preventive care plans that deliver different levels of coverage for different types of wellness treatments, so make sure you understand the plans you’re considering.
